Girls wrestling excels while hosting event

The Half Moon Bay High School girls wrestling team placed second out of 37 teams over the weekend after hosting one of the largest tournaments ever held in the city.

At 150 pounds, Cougar Daniela Corona dominated in her second straight tournament. She pinned three girls to become champion.

Finishing second were Llisel Badajos at 121 pounds and Elisa Mendez at 160 pounds. At 131 pounds, Taylor Micallef, and at 143 pounds, Esmeralda Mendez, each placed third.

Nataly Gijon was fourth at 235 pounds, as was Elisabeth Wallace at 131. At 101 pounds, Carmen Ramirez placed sixth for Half Moon Bay. Fellow Cougar Nayeli Acosta placed eighth at 131 pounds. Yulissa Ramirez pinned three straight girls to become consolation champ.


Boys fight hard at home tourney

With fewer wrestlers than at any time since 1994, the Cougar boys battled to finish 17th at their own Peninsula tourney on Saturday.

At 106 pounds, Tommy Sendino placed fourth. Fernando Diaz-Marquez was fifth at 113 pounds. Bryan Thorne was also sixth at 160 pounds. At 170 pounds, Eddy Lopez went 2-2. 

Carson Anderson went 2-1 to become the Consolation Champion at 182 pounds.

The junior varsity boys opened their season at the same tournament. Freshman 126-pounder Bo Volynsky-Krug  went 4-1 to capture third place. Fellow freshman, Christian Navarrete went 3-2 to place sixth at 113 pounds. First year junior Tyler Lamirande went 3-1 to become the Consolation Champ at 152 pounds.

Freshman Donovan Farnsworth went 2-2 at 120 and, at 195 pounds, Charlie Garnier got his first win.


HMB athletes named All League in fall sports

The Peninsula Athletic League has announced the rosters for the 2018 fall sports All League teams. 

In girls cross-country, Kendall Mansukhani and Claire Yerby were named as All League. 

In golf, Randi Marshall received the honor. 

The girls water polo Ocean Division All-League team includes Julie Raffetto as MVP and Jennifer Martuscelli as Most Valuable Goalkeeper. 

Kacie Sorfleet, Nikki Sorfleet and Caroline Zhu were named to first team all-league in water polo. Sophia Pappalardo was named to the second team, and Lily Nelson received an honorable mention. 

In the Bay Division of boys water polo, Andre Castro Santos was named to second team and Nate Felix received an honorable mention.
