In the summer, Sunday is hockey day as families and kids descend on the Half Moon Bay High School rink for a season of roller hockey.

Sunday was opening day for the NCHL. The coed recreational league will host five games every weekend through July. There are more than 80 players ranging in age from 5 to 16.

The league is dedicating the 2019 season to Gabrielle (Gabi) Alheli (Jensen) Benz, who lost her battle with breast cancer on April 11. Benz began a lifelong love of hockey at the age of 5 as a squirt in the NCHL and played there for 10 years. League organizer Ryan Sullivan was her coach for several years as well as a close family friend. “She was probably one of the most positive people I have ever met,” he said.
