The 10-and-under Pirates baseball team took home some hardware earlier this month, winning the silver bracket of the Father’s Day Classic in Fremont. The boys won their semifinal game against a team from Gilroy, 11-1, behind solid pitching from Mattias Jones, who went four innings and struck out five batters while walking no one.
The championship game was a slug-fest, with the Pirates coming out on top, 18-14. Riley Jackson, Julian Morra and Miles Meyer all had three hits in the game, with Meyer blasting a home run in the fourth inning. Jackson led the team in hitting for the tournament, going 8-for-12 with six RBIs and nine runs scored.
That same weekend, the 9-and-under Pirates came home with some bling of their own, earning silver medals at the Redwood City Tournament.
The boys placed first in pool play, beating the Peninsula Rays Blue, 12-1, the Hillsborough Hawks, 10-0, and the Los Altos All Stars, 14-2. They beat the South City All Stars in the semifinal game, 11-2, but struggled in the championship game against the Peninsula Rays Red, losing 11-1.
Every team member crossed the plate and collected RBIs during the tournament. Derek Rose led the team with six hits, and Brandon Melo, Jacob Cuoto and Brody Crudelli each added five hits.
Tristan Castro pitched five shut-out innings, giving up only four hits and collecting nine strike-outs, while Crudelli and Oliver Gestwicki combined for an outstanding double play.
