Half Moon Bay Golf Links announced the first female winner of its Legends Cup series. Christine Ely walked away with the win at the May 6 event, coming in 4 under par with a net score of 68 and a handicap of 15.

“I had no idea that I would win,” she said. “I knew I had a good round, but that was a surprise.”

The local business owner has been an athlete all her life and was a soccer player in her younger days in her native Germany. As she grew older, she knew she would need to find a less physically demanding sport.

She started playing golf in 1995 and was quickly “bitten by the bug,” she says. In fact, she moved to Ocean Colony to have easy access to her new favorite sport.

Ely competes regularly in golf events, but this was only her second time competing at the Legends Cup, a series of 12 one-day tournaments open to Legends Club members at Half Moon Bay Golf Links. The series of tournaments continues every few weeks through August.

In the tournament on May 6, there were 52 players, only six of whom were women.

“It was very exciting to have a woman winner,” said Zac Casey, tournament director for Half Moon Bay Golf Links.
