The Cunha Intermediate School boys soccer team ended its season with a win on Thursday, beating Bayside in overtime, 2-1, in the Art David Athletic League championship game.
In the second half, Cunha was awarded a penalty kick after Nathan Freitas was brought down in the box, and Julian Jimenez stepped up to give Cunha the lead. Later, Bayside was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball was called. It converted on to tie the game, 1-1.
Cunha fought hard the rest of the half, with Freitas, Erick Padilla and Johnny Morales all creating opportunities to score. Gael Segura hit the crossbar on a shot, but the team was not able to get another one in the net. The game ended with a 1-1 tie and went into extra time.
In the second half of overtime, Erick Padilla struck the ball from the right and was able to find the upper corner of the net, giving the boys a 2-1 victory and the championship title.
Cunha had an overall season record of 10 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie.
