Both Half Moon Bay High School varsity basketball teams advanced through the Central Coast Section Division IV quarterfinals in games played at the Coastside high school on Tuesday night.

The top-seeded Cougar girls team beat No. 8 Carmel, 63-25. The key was defensive pressure and limiting the opportunities of the Carmel bigs. The Cougars overwhelmed the visitors, 40-14, in the second half.

The girls now get ready to play No. 5 Scotts Valley on Thursday at Menlo School. The time of that game is to be determined.

On the boys side, the No. 3 Cougars ran past visiting No. 6 Pacific Grove, 76-35. They next face No. 2 Carmel on Thursday at Hartnell College in Salinas. The game time hasn’t yet been set.
