The Coastside under-12 boys team braved a hot day over the hill to win the American Youth Soccer Organization San Jose Tournament over the weekend.
The team competed in five games against teams from all over the Bay Area to reach the final game against Sunnyvale, winning the tight back-and-forth game in a shootout.
“It wasn’t great weather for Coastside kids — high 80s and sun,” said coach Jonathan Slusher. “But they played really well as a team and stayed positive.”
Goalie Lukas Slusher kept Half Moon Bay in the game early with several clutch saves, but Sunnyvale crept ahead and led, 2-1, by the end of the second half. With only a few minutes left to go, Dominic Elter-Bretz and Uriel Amezcua connected to tie it up, forcing the game into overtime.
The game ended in a shootout. Rylan Murrha sealed the win with a perfectly placed shot in the corner, bringing the final score to 5-4 in favor of Half Moon Bay.
Uriel Amezcua, Dominic Elter-Brezt, Lucas Allen, Rylan Murtha, Lukas Slusher, Jonathan Lopez and Anthony Sarabia all contributed goals over the six games, while Favio Polomino, Jaiden Sousa Ruiz, Kieran Costas and Corey Whitemarsh played solid defense.
