Participation in Half Moon Bay Little League’s Junior Division may be lagging, but the league certainly doesn’t want for talent.
With a 6-1 win over Menlo-Atherton on June 18, the Half Moon Bay Juniors all-star team earned the District 52 title. A two-run single from catcher Adrian Souza gave Half Moon Bay a second-inning lead it would never relinquish.
Trevor Coruccini and Aidan Vazquez held Menlo-Atherton to just five hits and one run over seven innings. Coruccini earned the win following his eight-strikeout performance. Corucinni said maintaining consistency with his fastball helped him get through five innings.
“He was lights-out,” manager Keeton Nerhan said.
Vasquez struck out four in two innings and added two hits at the plate. Infielders Maison Vining and Justin Vargas both reached base three times and scored two runs for Half Moon Bay.
Following its District 52 championship, Half Moon Bay will head to San Leandro, July 8–12 for the sectional tournament.
Coruccini said the team might need some time to adjust to new field dimensions; the tournament is played with 90-foot base paths and 60 feet between home plate and the pitcher’s mound, compared to 80 and 54 feet at the Juniors level.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but if there is any team that’s up for it, it’s this team,” Nerhan said.
