Puente de La Costa Sur, a nonprofit organization in Pescadero, is conducting its annual back-to-school event, the Backpack Drive, which aids students by providing them with supplies needed to be successful in school.
The program aims to lift a huge weight off of many families’ shoulders, as school supplies prove to be costly. Corina Rodriguez, an employee at Puente, explains why the Backpack Drive is important. “A parent of a young child can easily spend more than $100 per year per child on essential school supplies,” she said. “For many families, this is an overwhelming experience.”
The event benefits more than 250 La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District students. Being the only organization that supports students in its community, Puente is vital for South Coast students.
“Education is a priority for Puente as we strive to improve the quality of life for residents on the South Coast,” Rodriguez says. Not only will the backpack drive aid students in their education, but “adults and children will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of health and wellness activities and obtain free health screenings.”
Children are at the heart of the project. Organizers hope to give them an enriching experience.
“Puente’s backpack distribution event is unique because students are able to walk into their own back-to-school shop and get to decide what new backpack, planner or any other school item they want to ‘purchase,’” Rodriguez said.
Puente has reached 39 percent of its campaign goal. Its deadline to meet all supply requirements is fast-approaching, and Puente is seeking earnest hearts willing to donate to the cause.
There are several ways to donate.
A list of items that are required include No. 2 pencils, highlighters, pens, large erasers, water bottles, glue sticks, Post-Its, crayons, markers, colored pencils, rulers, binders, folders, mini staplers, white board markers, and naptime throw blankets, to name a few.
Donors can choose to buy the supplies and drop them off at Puente offices, 620 North St., Pescadero, or 8865 La Honda Road, Suite 4 in La Honda. The Pescadero office is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday; the La Honda office is open from 2 to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
