An election to determine whether three members of the Coastside Fire Protection District Board will be recalled is imminent.
President Doug Mackintosh, Director Mike Alifano and Director Gary Riddell came under fire from opponents who said that the men lacked transparency in their efforts to end ties with Cal Fire, the state agency that currently offers fire protection services to the Coastside, and establish an independent fire department.
Separate petitions for each of the three board members began to circulate in the summer. To determine whether an election for their recall would be held, each petition needed at least 2,714 signatures. Recall proponents submitted the petitions to county elections officials at the beginning of October.
Today, San Mateo County Elections Manager David Tom confirmed that enough petition signatures have been validated to move forward with an election.
According to county recall protocol, the election must be set between 88 and 125 days after governing board members announce it.
An elections official will attend tonight’s fire board meeting to deliver the petition certifications.
The 7:30 p.m. meeting is open to the public. Meet at the district headquarters at 1191 Main St. in Half Moon Bay.
