The body of a man found in the water near the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, has been identified as that of Naphtali Moi Moi, the 18-year-old Hayward High School student and football player who drowned off Poplar Beach on April 18.  At approximately 11:17 a.m. on Sunday, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the beach near the hotel on the southern end of Half Moon Bay. Someone called about a human body floating in the ocean water. Law enforcement determined it to be a man who had been deceased for some time.

Moi Moi was a football star from Hayward preparing to play Division I college football in the fall, according to multiple published reports. He was at Poplar Beach on April 18 with friends while on spring break. Friends said that he was swept out while boogie-boarding and he apparently drowned that day.

Authorities conducted an extensive search that evening and the next morning but saw no sign of the man in the hours after his disappearance.

Moi Moi’s father started a GoFundMe page asking for donations to go toward his son’s memorial.
