Voters approve La Honda Road district transfer  

San Mateo County voters have approved the transfer of several parcels located on La Honda Road from the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District to the Portola Valley School District and the Sequoia Union High School District. The special election was held on May 7 and the results  were official on May 21. 

The ballot measure passed with 100 percent voter approval by a total of 16 voters. According to the measure, the La Honda Road territory consists of 10 houses and 23 undeveloped parcels of land. 

Starting on July 1, 2020, residents of that territory will be considered part of the Portola Valley School District and the Sequoia Union High School District. Landowners within the region will also be subject to those district’s parcel taxes.

AAUW rummage sale benefits students   

Find some bargains while you help Coastside students at the American Association of University Women’s annual white elephant rummage sale. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, at the Historic Train Depot, 110 Higgins Canyon Road in Half Moon Bay.

The sale will feature some unique items, including Wedgewood china, pink Depression-era glass, designer boots, camping gear, a wide assortment of books and games, and more. At 2 p.m., shoppers will have the opportunity to pay $3 to fill a brown bag with anything that remains.

Proceeds support midcollege scholarships for graduates of Half Moon Bay High School. The branch is also sending five rising eighth-grade girls to Tech Trek science and math camp at Stanford.

 

City offers civics academy for students

The city of Half Moon Bay is offering students in eighth to 12th grade an opportunity to experience city operations and learn about how local government works. 

As participants of the Future Leaders Civics Academy program, students will meet city staff and council members, take part in a mock city council meeting and earn community service credit. Dinner is served at each session. 

The program takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 29, Sept. 5 and 12. Dinner is provided. Deadline to apply is June 30.
