The annual Coastside Community Christmas Sing brings together voices from denominations across the area for a night of festive caroling. Review file photo

Six church choirs are set to raise their voices in song as they kick off the holiday season during the Coastside Community Christmas Sing.

It’s a tradition that’s over a decade old, one that is meant to show unity between religious establishments on the coast as the community comes together to sing carols.

This year, Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church will play host. Musician Mike Rossi is organizing the event.

“There’s so much division in our culture right now,” said Rossi. “Anything that unifies us right now for a common cause is a good thing.

“The Community Sing kicks off the Christmas season, especially the hospitality portion,” he continued. “There are home-baked cookies that really add to the spirit.”

Choirs from Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, Holy Family Episcopal Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Coastside Lutheran Church, and the Community United Methodist Church will be participating. The Coastside Chorale is also expected to be in the musical mix.

“There will also be a Spanish choir who will be singing a Spanish Christmas carol,” Rossi said. He noted that one of the choirs will sing a song that he has written. His song, “Once Upon A Time,” will be showcased for the first time.

A Christmas cookie reception is scheduled for after the reception. Sandwiches, cider and coffee will also be offered. Admission is free.

“All are welcome to come and kick off Christmas in a very special way and in a community setting,” said Rossi.

The Coastside Community Christmas Sing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, 400 Church St. in Half Moon Bay.
