The Half Moon Bay Pirates 8-and-under baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat Santa Clara Westside, 16-11, claiming the one-day Sunnyvale Southern 8U Friendship Tournament, Sunday.
Down 6-0 after two innings, Half Moon Bay scored five in the third. Coleman Colucci keyed the rally with a two-run double.
Sam Lowings, Diego Ryan, Owen Wooliever, Tanner Bye and David Nieves added run-scoring hits. Jared Mettam was safe on an error.
The Pirates broke open the game with a four-run fifth. Parker Nishkian hit a run-scoring single.
Ryan, Nieves and Wooliever each finished the game with three hits. Colucci added two hits, along with William Moffitt and Quinn McCauley. Mettam caught a fly at third and threw to first to complete a double play.
Half Moon Bay scored five runs in the first and never looked back, defeating Serra, 10-4, in the second game of the tournament.
Colucci paced the offense, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Nieves, Mettam and Wooliever added three hits each. McCauley was 2-for-4 with a two-run triple. Ryan finished 2-for-3.
The Pirates took the opener, 7-6, over Newark Memorial. Wooliever was 3-for-3, scoring twice. Mettam and Ryan both went 2-for-3. Colucci hit a two-run double.
Colucci started a double play, catching a pop at first and throwing to Moffitt at second. Bye fielded a slow roller to the left of the pitcher’s mound and threw to Nishkian at the plate to tag out a runner. Nieves made a sliding catch in left, ending a scoring threat.
