The Half Moon Bay Pirates 8-and-under baseball team lost its first game of the season, falling to Redwood City, 9-8, in the title game of the Moreland 8U Tournament, held June 15-17.
Jared Mettam was 3-for-3 with a triple, scored twice and drove in two runs. Gavin Giacotto was also 3-for-3. William Moffitt added two hits. Right fielder Diego Ryan picked up an overthrow, and fired a strike to second baseman Owen Wooliever to get the out.
The Pirates advanced to the title game with an 8-4 win over Serra. Tanner Bye was 3-for-3, scoring twice. Wooliever added two hits and two runs. Quinn McCauley contributed two hits and two RBI. Giacotto contributed a run-scoring double during a five-run third inning. Ransom Lewis singled.
The defense shined in the 9-5 quarterfinal win over Belmont.
Ryan, backing up first, got to two errant throws. McCauley threw out a runner at second from his left field spot.
Moffitt was 3-for-3 with a triple and knocked in three runs. Wooliever was 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice. Giacotto hit a run-scoring triple.
Half Moon Bay won all three of its pool games, with the 12-11 win over Los Altos/Mountain View being the only close game. Wolliever was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Coleman Colucci was 3-for-3 with four RBI and scored twice. Moffitt was 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Mettam collected two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Half Moon Bay took the lead for good in the fifth. Ryan led off with a double, moved to third when Lewis was safe on an error and scored on Wooliever’s sacrifice fly.
Half Moon Bay followed that with a 16-4 win over Sunnyvale. Both Mettam and McCauley had three hits, including two doubles. Ryan and Wooliever added two hits.
The Pirates ended pool play with a 13-0 win, collecting 19 hits. McCauley and Sam Lowings each went 3-for-3 with a triple. Lowings drove in four. Colucci, Moffitt, Mettam, Bye and Giacotto all added two hits.
