Mia Cummings spent most of the summer trying to learn as much as possible about water polo.

She talked with rival coaches in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division and the PAL Bay Division, the upper league.

She chatted often with boys coach Brice Tarling. She talked a lot with her new assistant coach, Amanda Stillwell. She even had email conversations with Stanford women’s coach John Tanner.

She asked everything under the sun.

“I asked about the new type of caps that were going to be required,” Cummings said. “I asked about conditioning.”

Practice started Friday and will go every day. The Cougars play their first tournament on the weekend of Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at the Janette MacKinlay Memorial Tournament at Gunn High School in Palo Alto.

“We had two conditioning sessions during the summer,” Cummings said. “The girls are anxious to start the season.”

Cummings expects to have 13 girls on the varsity and at least 12 more on the frosh-soph team.

Welcome to the discussion.
