Three was not a magic number for the Half Moon Bay High School girls water polo team last week.
The Cougars lost both of their Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division matches by three goals. Half Moon Bay lost to Mills, 6-3, Thursday, and to Menlo School, 14-11, two days earlier.
The Cougars share last place with a 0-3 record.
Half Moon Bay was scheduled to host Woodside, Tuesday. Results of the match were not available at press time.
The Cougars play at Terra Nova, Thursday, and at San Mateo on Oct. 2.
“We just couldn’t get that many shots off,” said coach Mia Cummings. “We played excellent defense. The girls are frustrated.”
Half Moon Bay scored two of its three goals in the fourth quarter. The Vikings were up 6-1 when the quarter started. Kyla Kemp scored twice and Robin Strasser added a goal.
“We are not playing like we practice,” Cummings said. “We have great practices. We just can’t seem to put it together in games.”
Menlo took charge of the game, jumping out to a 14-5 lead after three quarters.
Kyla Kemp, Annie Zell and Micaela White each scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull the Cougars close. Zell finished with four goals with White getting three.
Aria Chee and Kaila Clark each scored.
