Longtime Half Moon Bay resident and retired horticulturist, Dieter Polze, passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2012. He was 70.
He is survived by his loving wife, Simone, relatives in Germany and many local friends.
Dieter was from Thuringia, in the eastern part of Germany. In 1959, at the age of 17, he decided to leave his family behind in restrictive East Germany and seek his fortune in West Germany. The regime was not anxious for people of working age to leave, and there were many obstacles in crossing the border to West Germany.
In 1962, Dieter immigrated to the United States, eventually reaching Half Moon Bay in 1969. He had a long career in the Half Moon Bay horticulture industry and enjoyed working with plants and people. Outside of work, Dieter liked traveling, watching soccer and hosting guests.
A memorial service is being planned; details will be announced at a later date.
