A single-car crash on Highway 1 early Tuesday morning claimed the life of one San Mateo man and sent the passenger to the hospital.

The crash occurred at about 12:41 a.m. near the intersection of Spindrift Way in Half Moon Bay. San Mateo County Sheriff's officials say a 23-year-old driver lost control of his 1998 Nissan sedan and the car rolled over. The driver was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Sheriff's release. A passenger, a second 23-year-old man from San Mateo, was taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Highway 1 was closed until 4:25 a.m. as crews removed the wreckage and investigated the incident.

It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 between the Devil's Slide tunnels and Half Moon Bay in little more than two weeks.

Also, if it turns out that the tunnel is inherently unsafe based on the number of accidents occurring in and around it (and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if data collected over time shows this to be the case) I'd be all for tracking tunnel accidents as a separate newsworthy item for the coast. That being said, an accident like this in HMB shouldn't reference Devils Slide or the tunnel. Even the SFGate article that ran this morning made no such reference.

I guess the point is if the accident took place in HMB, what does Devil's slide have to do with anything? If we're talking about tracking accidents on the coast, let's just refer to Pacifica through HMB and leave references to Devils Slide out of it.

August East, I don't understand your comment. The author's markers aren't random -- they're just more precise than yours.

"It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 between the Devil's Slide tunnels and Half Moon Bay in little more than two weeks."

Yay for arbitrarily working some Devils Slide hysteria into the piece.

In other words:

"It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 on the Midcoast in little more than two weeks."

"It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 on the Midcoast in little more than two weeks."

or can we go to other random markers:

"It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 between Linda Mar shopping center and Cunha Intermediate school"

"It is the third fatal accident on Highway 1 on the scenic portion that begins on the south end of Pacifica and continues through Half Moon Bay"

etc. etc.
