Justin Ferdinand is ready to embark on a new challenge.
A long time teacher and water polo coach at Aliso Niguel High School in Southern California, Ferdinand is the new athletic director at Half Moon Bay High School.
He replaces Matt Ballard who announced his resignation as football coach and athletic director earlier this year. Ballard left to become the football coach at Redondo Union High School. Keith Holden was named the new football coach in May.
Ferdinand spent last week meeting people while learning all he could about Half Moon Bay High School.
“I am anxious and excited,” Ferdinand said. “This has been a good week for me. I am starting to get a better understanding of the responsibilities of the position.”
His responsibilities include teaching a few special education classes as well as handing the duties of athletic director. He was also a special education teacher at Aliso Niguel.
He will not be coaching sports at Half Moon Bay, at least for a while.
“If the water polo coaches have questions about strategy, I will be there for them,” Ferdinand said.
He coached girl’s water polo at Mission Viejo High School as well. In the Southern Section, boys water polo takes place in the fall with the girls playing water polo in winter.
He resigned from coaching at Mission Viejo following the 2011 season. Two of those girl teams qualified for the playoffs. Three teams from Aliso Niguel also qualified for the playoffs, including last year’s team.
Moving up the coast allows him to be closer to his family. A graduate of California High School in the East Bay, his family now lives in Santa Cruz.
