"Chasing Mavericks,” previously titled “Of Men and Mavericks,” is chasing down its Oct. 26 silver screen debut and producers have released a pair of trailers. They can be seen on YouTube.
Partially filmed on the San Mateo County coast, the movie delves into how surf legend Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston) tackles the monstrous waves under the guidance of seasoned surfer Rick “Frosty” Hesson (Gerard Butler).
It gained some infamy during its making in December 2011 when Butler, whom you might recognize as King Leonidas in “300,” was submerged under two waves and hit by several more before making it ashore. Witness reports indicate that he was subsequently hospitalized.
Butler later developed a dependence on pain medication because of related injuries. He went to drug rehab and checked out in February.
The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox, was directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted, and produced by Walden Media and Fox 2000 Pictures.
