For the sixth year, Holy Family Episcopal Church in Half Moon Bay, joined by a handful of generous partners, will give backpacks filled with essential school supplies to school-age youth.

The giveaway is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Community United Methodist Church, but organizers still welcome donations of supplies and financial support.

The giveaway is a combined effort involving Holy Family with partners Community United Methodist Church, Coastside Lutheran Church, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Pacifica, the Coastside Jewish Community, the Coastside Mothers’ Club, Coastside Hope, Coastside Catholic Worker, Cabrillo Unified School District Migrant Education and New Leaf Community Market.

Currently, organizers have signed up 500 children in need of these supplies, a soaring increase of 200 children above last year.

Donations are still welcome of supplies including binders, notebooks, college- or wide-rule paper, colored pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, pencils and pens, highlighters, scissors and backpacks, though the Episcopal church has already ordered some. Recipients range from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Donations of materials can be made at the offices of Catholic Worker at 160 Kelly Ave., and financial donations to Holy Family Episcopal Church at 1590 Cabrillo Highway, both Half Moon Bay.

The Methodist church is located at 777 Miramontes St. in Half Moon Bay.
