Volunteers take control of medical records

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court is expected today to give full guardianship of thousands of medical records from the closed Coastside Family Medical Center to local volunteers at the Phoenix Project.

Organizers from the Phoenix Project say they plan to immediately begin a new drive to distribute medical records back to patients.

“Finally after all these months, we have guardianship,” said Dr. Grant Weiss, Phoenix Project director. “Absolutely, the most important thing now is to get the word out to the community.”

What to do with inventory of medical records has been the most pressing question in the bankruptcy case for the former clinic. For months, the records of thousands of patients were held in locked storage because neither clinic directors nor the court-appointed trustee had the resources to mount an effective distribution system.

For patients suffering from chronic conditions or needing surgery, lacking medical records meant they had to undergo repeat tests and delay critical treatment.

As soon as he takes possession, Weiss says he wants to begin getting records back in the hands of patients. Former patients can request their medical charts by submitting new forms to the Phoenix Project. Organizers say they need patients to submit forms so they can retrieve the correct medical charts.

Patients will then be able to pick up their records from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Purisima Family Medicine at 575 Kelly Avenue. Patients will be required to bring some form of legal identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.
