With less than two minutes left in the game, John W. Parsons walked the sidelines one final time Friday night.

He wasn’t pacing nervously. The Half Moon Bay High School boys’ basketball team was well on its way to starting the second half of the Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division season with a victory, an eventual 55-36 win over Oceana.

Half Moon Bay knocked off Sequoia two nights earlier, 63-42. Elsewhere that night, Capuchino was beating Westmoor, 43-33. As a result, Half Moon Bay, Westmoor and Capuchino are in a three-way tie for first.

While Westmoor had a bye Friday and Half Moon Bay defeated Oceana, Capuchino fell to Sequoia, 54-52, in overtime. Half Moon Bay sits alone in first at 4-1, with Westmoor one-half game back at 3-1, and Capuchino a full game back at 3-2.

“The league title is up for grabs,” Agustin Arroyo said.

When the final horn sounded, Parsons stopped thinking about the defensive effort the Cougars put on Friday night, and started to focus on this week’s lone game, Friday night’s contest at Capuchino.

Half Moon Bay won the first game on Jan. 20, 69-46.

“They are a very good team,” Arroyo said. “They will have the home court advantage. They will play hard.”

The Mustangs have won six of their seven home games this year.

There were plenty of smiles in the Half Moon Bay locker room after Friday’s game. The Cougars don’t need any help in claiming the league title.

“We still have to battle for the league title,” Alex Reis said. “Nothing will be given to us.”
