Transient throws stolen phone into highway

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Feb 03, 2010 - 11:04:23 am PST

A homeless man reportedly walked up to the drive-through window of the Coastside McDonald’s early Monday morning and snatched an employee’s cell phone and ran away.

The McDonald’s employee got the attention of a Sheriff’s deputy at Strawflower Village, who started chasing the homeless man.

The suspected thief was identified as James Scott, a repeat offender who has a lengthy record of crimes in Half Moon Bay dating back to 2002.

Before the deputy could retrieve the stolen phone, Scott threw it into the traffic on Highway 1. He then ran into the Purisima Creek area, and tried to hide from the police.

The employee’s phone was smashed after being run over by several cars.

Authorities found Scott about an hour and a half later, when he emerged from the creek area. He was arrested and taken to jail.

Scott was already being sought by police for repeatedly causing a disturbance at HMB Coffee Company.

On Saturday, Scott was throwing food at the café and was kicked out, according to police reports. Two days later, he went back to the Coffee Company and bought some coffee. He tried to steal some pastries, and when an employee told him to leave, he poured his coffee onto the floor.

Scott was arrested on Monday on charges of robbery, burglary, grand theft, obstructing arrest and defrauding a business. The case has been forward to the district attorney’s office.
