Local actor, director and theater arts teacher Michael Lederman of El Granada, has been named San Mateo County Arts Educator of the Year by the Peninsula Arts Council.

He will receive the award and proclamations of appreciation signed by numerous county government leaders, at the eighth annual Diamond Awards: Celebrating the Arts in San Mateo County, on Thursday, Jan. 28.

Lederman learned of the award when his phone sounded just as he was preparing to dive into the ocean on a recent Hawaiian vacation.

Michael Lederman heads a class of drama students.

“I was pretty speechless. I'm still humbled by the whole idea,” he said. “It made me take a look at how fortunate I am to collaborate with some of the best (local theatrical) artists and to have such tremendous students.”

Lederman, who is also the Coastal Repertory Theatre artistic director, has taught drama and theater arts for 18 years on the Coastside, at Sea Crest and Pescadero High schools and through his Coastal Theatre Conservatory.

The Diamond Awards salutes outstanding nominees in the categories of Organization, the Ray Lorenzato Young Artist (18 and younger) Award, Individual Artists, Arts Educator, Arts Volunteer, Local Business Support, Government Support for the Arts, and Special Recognition. Also nominated in the Organization category was the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee.

Names are sent to a nominating committee by category, and one person or organization is selected on a basis of who “the nominating committee feels made the greatest contribution,” said Judy King, Peninsula Arts Council office manager.

Though they may not be winners, nominees get letters of commendation, King said, since it is “also an honor to be nominated.”

The Diamond Awards will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Redwood Shores Public Library at 399 Marine Parkway in Redwood Shores.
