With its 62-50 win over Balboa Saturday afternoon, the Half Moon Bay High School boys’ basketball team showed it was no longer the young team that won only four games all of last year.

“We did have a young team last year,” said coach John W. Parsons. “We are not too surprised to have equaled our win total.”

The Cougars went 2-2 last week, improving to 4-3 overall. Saturday’s win was the only victory the Cougars got in their participation in the Lowell Invitational Tournament.

Half Moon Bay began the tournament with a 46-41 loss to Lowell, Thursday. That was followed with a 58-38 loss to Carlmont.

Alex Reis made his season debut in the Lowell Tournament, scoring 56 points in the three games. He was the Cougars’ lone all-tournament pick.

Two days before the tournament started, Half Moon Bay picked up its most impressive win of the young season, defeating Piedmont, 58-52.

“They have a lot of big athletes,” Parsons said. “They have players being scouted by Sacramento State.”

Half Moon Bay returns to Piedmont this week, playing in the Piedmont Tournament. Half Moon Bay plays Bear River at 5 p.m., Thursday.

The Cougars arrive at each game with a different attitude.

“We now enter every game with the mindset that we are going to win,” Parsons said. “Last year, we had the mindset of playing well.”
