Locals win final horseshoe tournaments of year

Members of the Half Moon Bay Horseshoe Club won their respective divisions at the Don Reip and Dick McCall Tournament, held Dec. 5 at Smith Field.

Foa Remillong won Group I with Jim Saunders of the San Jose Club second. Roy Ebbel claimed Group II with Ed Moore, also of the San Jose Club, second.

Dick McCall won Group III with Kim Stovall for Forebay Park in Pollack Pines second.

Bob Short won Group IV. Gino Rinaldi, a new member to the Half Moon Bay Club, was second.

The father-son group of Joe Sciarra and Joey Sciarra won Group I of the Rick Della Santina Doubles Tournament, Dec. 6.

Della Santina and Dick McCall took second.

Jim Crouch and Eric Hammer of the San Jose Club won Group II with Glen O’Brien and Ron Nelson of the Half Moon Bay Club second.

Personal bests for O’Connell, Stretch

Kiyomi O’Connell and Sarah Stretch set personal bests at the Pacific Swimming Junior Olympic meet, held Dec. 4 in Pleasanton.

O’Connell took off nearly half-a-second in the 100-yard breast stroke, finishing in 1 minutes, 17,65 seconds.

Stretch’s most dramatic drop came in the 200 backstroke, where she finished in 2:27.21, a personal best by more than six seconds. She also she set personal bests in the 100 freestyle and the 50 backstroke.

Frosh-soph drops two games

The Half Moon Bay frosh-soph boys’ basketball team went 1-2 last week in nonleague action.

The Cougars fell to Harker, 43-38, Saturday, despite 12 points from Jordan Moldovan. Moldovan scored 12 points in the 66-58 overtime loss to South San Francisco. He was one of four players to finish in double figures.

The Cougars beat Piedmont, 56-48 on Dec. 8. Jesus Huerta scored 17 points, and was 12-of-14 from the free throw line. Dominique Williams added 11 points.

Freshmen win first game

Half Moon Bay defeated University High School, 48-22 Saturday to pick up its first win of the season.

Tom Howell led a balanced attack with eight points.
