The San Mateo County Coroner has identified the body of a 49-year-old woman recovered from the water just south of Half Moon Bay on Thursday.

Tamara Andruss, of San Jose, was pulled from the water about one-half mile south of the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay Thursday afternoon. The cause of death is unknown at this time. The coroner has planned an autopsy for next week.

Half Moon Bay Police Chief Don O’Keefe said State Parks rangers recovered Andruss' body of shortly after 3:30 p.m. The body was described as “partially clothed.” O’Keefe said that is not uncommon in bodies pulled from the ocean as rocks and snags can dislodge clothing.

O’Keefe said there were no obvious signs of trauma and that it didn’t appear Andruss had been in the water for very long.

Rescuers scrambled after a 911 caller reported a body in the water somewhere between Miramar and the Ritz Thursday afternoon. That inexact location, coupled with dense fog, complicated emergency efforts. The U.S. Coast Guard scrambled a helicopter and the Pillar Point Harbor Patrol joined in the search.

There was a high-surf warning at the time of the call. “And visibility was about 50 feet,” O’Keefe said.
