The week didn’t end on a good note for the Half Moon Bay High School girls’ basketball team as it fell to Paradise, 50-36, in the finals of the Oroville Tournament, Saturday night.

But that was the only loss in four games last week. Half Moon Bay won its first two games of the tournament rather convincingly, defeating Lincoln 52-28, Friday night, and Wheatland, 51-27, Thursday.

Lauren Ward and Lena King were named to the all-tournament team.

Two days before heading off the Oroville, the Cougars knocked off Wallenberg, 77-49.

The Cougars (4-3) host Woodside at 8 p.m., Thursday in the first round of the Half Moon Bay Classic. The tournament concludes Saturday.

The Cougars play two nonleague games next week, visiting Capuchino on Dec. 21 and hosting Washington of San Francisco the next day. The Cougars don’t play until Jan. 7, playing Carlmont.

The Cougars start Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division play on Jan. 12.

Though many observers figured Half Moon Bay would have a strong team based on losing just two starters, the first week at the Mills Tournament was a struggle. Things got better last week.

“The kids are starting to get more confident in what they are doing,” coach John Carey said. “Hopefully, we have turned the corner.”

By winning the first two games of the tournament, the Cougars set themselves up to play Paradise, the Northern Section defending champions. The Bobcats took charge at the outset, scoring the game’s first 12 points. It was never close after that.

“I was disappointed that we didn’t play better,” Carey said.

But he couldn’t complain about Ward and King being named to the all-tournament team.

“Lauren was one of our leaders on the court,” Carey said. “Lena was a spark for us, coming off the bench. She scored in double figures twice.”
