Cougars win girls frosh-soph tournament

Stevie Hallgren scored 12 points and Lyndsay Klimenko added 11 as Half Moon Bay High School defeated Evergreen Valley, 61-33 to win the Leland Frosh-Soph girls’ basketball tournament Saturday.

The Cougars began the tournament Thursday with a 53-52 win over Notre Dame-San Jose. Elizabeth Moules scored 18 points and Hallgren added 16. Following Notre Dame’s final score, the Cougars ran out the final 20 seconds to get the win.

The Cougars followed that with a 47-42 win over tournament hosts Leland, Friday. Klimenko scored 10 points for Half Moon Bay.

Freshmen drop three games

The Half Moon Bay High School boys’ freshmen basketball team dropped its first three games last week.

The Cougars fell to Sacred Heart Prep, 28-21, Saturday. Dan O’Connor and Jack Dobbrow each scored five points for the Cougars.

Half Moon Bay lost to Lick-Wilmerding, 29-25, Friday. Lincoln Traynor led the Cougars with 12 points.

Half Moon Bay dropped its first game to Palo Alto Wednesday, 66-14. Ryan Segervall scored five points for Half Moon Bay.

The Cougars are scheduled to participate in the San Lorenzo Valley Tournament this week.

Cougars seventh in JV Wrestling Tournament

The Half Moon Bay High School Junior Varsity wrestling team finished seventh at Friday’s Peninsula Invitational Junior Varsity Tournament.

The Cougars finished with 120.5 points, trailing sixth-place Lowell, which had 126 points. Gunn won with 267.5 points.

Samuel Weiss was the top finisher for the Cougars, taking second at 119 pounds. Brian Martinez was third at 145 pounds.

Grant Pope finished fifth at 103 pounds, with Dylan Henschel sixth at 160 pounds and Jacob Mulderick eighth at 103 pounds.

Meanwhile, the girls finished 17th with 22 points. Castro Valley won with 190 points.

Michelle Alvarez was fourth at 122 pounds and Kirstin Egger took seventh at 154 pounds.
