The holidays meet a celebration of the colorful histories of Half Moon Bay and surrounding areas at “Holiday History Day” this weekend.

Scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. at the Coastal Arts League at 300 Main St. in Half Moon Bay, Holiday History Day will present four authors signing their books. All of the books deal with local history, and present a tapestry of historical events, viewpoints, people, places and stories.

“We have a nice cross-section of different perspectives and piece of the history of our coast,” said author JoAnn Semones of Half Moon Bay, author of “Shipwrecks, Scalawags and Scavengers: The Stories Waters of Pigeon Point,” who will discuss and sign copies of that book. “Everything from ships to the Civil War to the development of our own city of Half Moon Bay. A nice cross-section representing our coast.”

Semones’ book, which covers sailors, wrecks, and stories in waters off Pigeon Point and Año Nuevo and spanning the century between 1853 to 1953, is the first of a trilogy about central California lighthouses and shipwrecks. The second volume, focusing on Point Montara and Half Moon Bay, is due for release in spring 2010. The third will focus on Point Sur.

She will join local history authors Dave Cresson of Half Moon Bay, whose recently formed Half Moon Bay History Association is presenting History Day, and Michael Orange and John Edmonds.

Cresson will discuss and sign his book “Turning Points: Through the Windows of the Zaballa House,” which addresses the storied Main Street house, people and events that all shaped the development of Half Moon Bay.

Orange will discuss his book “Half Moon Bay: Historic Coastside Reflections,” which also covers the history and development of Half Moon Bay.

And Edmonds, who once worked with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and who addresses history from the perspective of a non-professional-historian, will discuss his two books: “Cops, Courts, Jails and Judges: Historical Perspective of San Mateo County Criminal Justice,” and “The Civil War: Northern California’s Unrecognized Valor.”

The event may be an introduction to Cresson’s historical association, housed in the Zaballa House where he maintains a small museum of local historical books, documents and artifacts. He plans more such events, focusing on local history, in the future, Semones said, and is also considering the creation of a document around a walking tour with map of Half Moon bay historic locations and old buildings.

The authors will have copies of their books to sign and sell, said Semones. Holiday History Day is free. For information, call 712-0804.

Give the gift of life

The holidays are a very busy time for everyone, but unfortunately accidents don’t take a holiday at all. So there is still need for generous-hearted Coastsiders to give blood.
