David John Chapman

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Dec 02, 2009 - 11:20:51 am PST

David John Chapman died Oct. 21, at home, of natural causes after a long illness. His wife Diane was by his side. He was 75.

Dave was born in a small town in Nebraska in 1934, attending a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from high school at the age of 16. He later attended the University of Nebraska where he received his bachelor’s degree, Northwestern University where he received his master’s, and Pepperdine University where he received his master’s in business administration.

He served in the Army as a military policeman in Korea in the late 1950s, and retired from the Army Reserves at age 62 with the rank of colonel.

He moved to Palo Alto, Calif., and began a distinguished career at Ampex, running at different times the International and the Data Systems divisions. He traveled extensively during his career through the Soviet Union, Asia, South America and Europe. He retired in 1989 as an executive vice president.

After retiring from Ampex, he began another career, as a teacher of International Relations and Marketing at Notre Dame University and the University of San Francisco.

He married Diane Hull in 1983, and they bought a ranch on the coast of Pescadero. Dave loved Pescadero, and said that he didn't want to leave unless it was feet first.

Dave was an avid collector all his life, collecting local art, Indian baskets, Irish and English china, Nebraskan quilts, African and Mexican folk art and, his favorite of all, beach glass and beach rocks. To support this hobby, he bought and ran an antique store, Country Roads, in Pescadero. He loved gardening, music, animals, his grandchildren, and was a voracious reader. And though he had been a vice president of a high-tech company, he hated the Internet and e-mail.

He is survived by his wife Diane, his children, Cathe, David, Jim, Sue, Sean, Randy and Brett, his beloved grandchildren Jacquie, Max, Emma, Louis and Beth, his sister Mary Ida, and his brothers Chick and John.

Donations in lieu of flowers are welcome to the Coastside Adult Day Health Care Center in Half Moon Bay.

Single mom needs help with bills

This month's spotlight request was from Shannon Sinnock of Half Moon Bay. After her divorce, Sinnock received support from her ex-husband to help with the costs of raising their two daughters. Five years ago, Sinnock’s ex-husband passed away, leaving her without child support or funds for the girls. One daughter is now 24 and living away. Sinnock’s younger daughter, Charlotte, 16, is a junior at Half Moon Bay High.
