Monday is last day to appeal assessments

Monday, Nov. 30 will be the last day that property owners in San Mateo County can file an assessment appeal on the valuation of their property for the calendar year 2009.

Assessment appeals are generally filed by the property owner when the homeowner disagrees with the valuation set by the assessor. “While we’re not looking to increase the number of appeals filed, we do want property owners in San Mateo County to know that their deadline to file an appeal for 2009 is just a week away,” explained Warren Slocum, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor — County Clerk — Recorder in a release. To file an appeal, property owners must contact the San Mateo County Assessment Appeals Board, an independent panel appointed by the Board of Supervisors to hear assessment appeals. The Web site for the Assessment Appeals Board describes the process and has the forms that property owners will need to complete and file with the AAB Clerk by 5 p.m. on Monday if they intend to file an assessment appeal for this year in San Mateo County.
