Expect strong waves into Saturday

The U.S. Coast Guard is warning those along the shore to exercise caution Friday and Saturday as The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for the coastline from Sonoma County through the Coastside and southward through Monterey County.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at through 4 a.m. Saturday, breaking waves of 14 to 18 feet are expected across the region. North to northwest winds with gusts up to 30 miles per hour are forecast.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends that people avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas, especially jetties and rocky areas, through the long holiday weekend. Large waves can quickly, and unexpectedly sweep people off of the beach. Even the strongest swimmers can quickly be overtaken by the power of the sea, especially when the water is cold.

In a press release, the Coast Guard asked people to resist the urge to go see the big waves and strong surf. The agency also strongly recommends boaters avoid taking to the water over the next few days, until the seas subside.
