Following birth, in June 21, 1972, in Philadelphia, Penn., he moved to Palo Alto with his family at age 3. He attended Gunn High School, graduated from Yale in 1993, and received a PH.D in Biophysics from the University of California, San Francisco in 1999. He worked as informatics manager at Sunesis Pharmaceuticals until 2003, when he left to found his own company, DeLano Scientific.
DeLano Scientific supported PyMol, which Warren developed as an open source commercial product. This molecular visualization software was widely adopted as a standard by pharmaceutical and academic research institutions. Warren gained international recognition as an advocate of open source information systems to facilitate scientific exchange and discovery.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Warren Lyford DeLano Memorial Fund through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The fund will be used to recognize and support scientists who develop open source systems.
