McCaffrey calls for recount in GSD race

El Granada resident and Granada Sanitary District board candidate Lisa McCaffrey is requesting a recount in the Nov. 4 election.

After a nail-biting election and drawn-out ballot count, newcomer candidate McCaffrey lost to GSD incumbent Leonard Woren by 10 votes. The final count was 577 for Woren and 567 for McCaffrey.

McCaffrey submitted an official request with the county Elections Office Tuesday afternoon to have the ballots recounted, “because it’s so close and it’s so important,” she said.

McCaffrey will pay $828 per day during the recall, unless the results change, in which case the county foots the bill.

County Elections Manager David Tom said the recount shouldn’t take more than a day “but with possible questions that may come up it may be more than a day.” The recount will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.

When asked what spurred her decision, McCaffrey recalled a GSD meeting she attended last week.

“It’s just really concerning when they spend the majority of the meeting talking about (Midcoast Local Coastal Program) issues … and I think the focus needs to change to thinking about the sewer system,” she said.
