Fundraiser blends music, food, philanthropy

“One part fund-raising and nine parts friend-raising” is how organizers bill tonight's fundraiser at Cypress Meadows in Moss Beach: an evening of entertainment that will divide proceeds three ways to Puente de la Costa Sur, Coastside Angels and Loco Bloco.

It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cypress Meadows conference and event center.

Puente de la Costa Sur, based in Pescadero, provides assistance and education to Spanish-speaking South Coast residents. The event is a new thing for the organization, said director Kerry Lobel.

“We have never had an event in the north part of the coast,” she said. “So we were very excited when friends at Cypress Meadows called us.”

In partnership with Puente, Coastside Angels does a lot with a little to meet needs from glasses to soccer shoes to backpacks for school kids on the South Coast. One of its recent activities was Kickoff to Kindergarten, for which Coastside Angels equipped incoming kindergartners with needed backpacks.

“They are things that matter to the person who needs them,” said Lobel.

The event will begin with tapas and sangria, courtesy of Joy Portelli's Event Savvy, and entertainment will be provided by the event’s third beneficiary, San Francisco-based Loco Bloco, at 6:45 p.m.

Located in San Francisco’s Mission District, Loco Bloco offers positive avenues for youth by encouraging them to get in touch with creativity through dance, art, music, drama or drumming. Through Loco Bloco, youth have done large-scale productions with dancing and drumming. Last year, Puente brought Loco Bloco to Pescadero to work with Pescadero Elementary and Pescadero Middle schools after-school arts programs.

This event’s musical entertainment entails drumming, stiltwalking, dance and singing, by youth age 5 to 19, Lobel said.

The event will also include a silent auction and interaction, Lobel said. “It's an opportunity for people to have low-key entertainment for the holidays, and a way to meet new people.”

The Cypress Meadows event center is located at 343 Cypress Ave. in Moss Beach. Admission is a suggested $25 donation, or whatever the donor can give.

Time to help Scouts collect food

Starting Saturday, Coastsiders should be on the lookout for a placard hanging on their doors with food collection information. It’s a calling card from local Boy Scout troops, who are involved in the annual Scouting for Food drive.
