San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools Jean Holbrook announced Monday that she plans to retire at the end of her current term, in January of 2011.

Holbrook was first appointed superintendent in 2006 and was elected to a four-year term in 2007.

The superintendent helps manage more than $500 million annually and maintains compliance across several aspects of local education. The department of education also operates special education programs and other instructional services.

“Jean Holbrook is an outstanding county superintendent of schools,” said board president Jim Cannon in a prepared statement. “Her leadership has been exemplary in San Mateo County’s drive to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for all students.”

Time to help Scouts collect food

Starting Saturday, Coastsiders should be on the lookout for a placard hanging on their doors with food collection information. It’s a calling card from local Boy Scout troops, who are involved in the annual Scouting for Food drive.
