The touch of a Coastside film producer is being felt in a documentary that is airing around the country this month.

Steve Michelson of Lobitos Creek Ranch production and post-production studio just south of Half Moon Bay, was one producer to work on “River of Renewal,” a documentary on the Klamath River that is set to air over KQED this Sunday.

A Pikiawish Partners production in association with Specialty Studios and produced by Friends of the River members Michelson and Stephen Most along with Jack Kohler, “River of Renewal” is the winner of the best Documentary at the American Indian Film Festival in 2008. It focuses on the river, hydroelectric dams. their effect on salmon and the groups striving to rectify a troubling situation.

The Klamath River basin in Northern California and southwestern Oregon is home to ranchers, farmers, Commercial fishermen and Native American tribes. Hydroelectric dams on the river have impeded the ability of salmon to migrate between the ocean and their river breeding grounds, prompting the groups to negotiate and come to agreement on sharing the water and improving the habitat.

The 55-minute documentary traces the back story behind the process and looks at the conflict from the Native American perspective, tracing the culture revolving around the salmon as well as nearly a decade of protests.

“The dams were built in a time when jobs were needed and sources of energy were scarce,” said Kohler. “Now it is time to Pikiawish – renew — the world.”

“River of Renewal” will air at 6 p.m. on KQED on Sunday, Nov. 15.

Time to help Scouts collect food

Starting Saturday, Coastsiders should be on the lookout for a placard hanging on their doors with food collection information. It’s a calling card from local Boy Scout troops, who are involved in the annual Scouting for Food drive.
