On Saturday, when Coastside Books owner Nancy Arruda opens her doors for a book-signing for Half Moon Bay residents Tom and Rachel Formaro and “Alfonso, the Christmas Pumpkin,” it hails a new chapter in her own life.

Arruda, who purchased Coastside Books in September from longtime owners Jules and Inge Sofer, also heads the Bees Knees publishing company, which she plans to focus on children’s picture books.

Bees Knees started with a blog that Arruda shared in 2007 with sister Kim Baise.

Nancy Arruda stands in Coastside Books, which she owns. She is also the driving force behind publishing company Bees Knees Reads.

Out of it came a small press, when the sisters found themselves looking at children’s book publishing projects. They developed two this year: “Maybelle, Bunny of the North,” about a bunny in Alaska and released in March, and “A Wonderful Week,” by an author in the Netherlands.

Arruda met the “Alfonso” authors when Rachel Formaro approached her for feedback upon learning about Bees Knees. Since Arruda already had projects going, they did not team up for “Alfonso.” Instead, a friendship was formed, and Coastside Books will host the signing Saturday.

Arruda said she envisions more of the same kind of publishing projects for Bees Knees, since in children’s literature Arruda says books are alive and well.

She said she is open to publishing more children’s and picture books as well as serve as a resource for authors. She said she also would like to eventually host writing workshops and more book signings, as well. And in the meantime, it’s business as usual at Coastside Books.

Coastside books can be reached at 726-5889.

Time to help Scouts collect food

Starting Saturday, Coastsiders should be on the lookout for a placard hanging on their doors with food collection information. It’s a calling card from local Boy Scout troops, who are involved in the annual Scouting for Food drive.
