Cougars rolling as season nears conclusion

The volleyball season is just about over for the Half Moon Bay High School volleyball team.

The Cougars were scheduled to end their season Tuesday, hosting Terra Nova in a Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division match.

The Cougars, assured of finishing no worse than fourth place in the league, will spend the next few days wondering if their season gets extended by a week.

Lindsay Avila records one of her 12 kills in Half Moon Bay'€™s three-set win over Capuchino last week.

The Central Coast Section seeding meeting is Saturday and Half Moon Bay coach Deanna Rocha plans to be there with paperwork in hand. She admits that the Cougars’ chances of making their first appearance in the playoffs since 2006 are slim.

Blame that on the Cougars’ overall record of 13-12, playing in a “C” league and having two tournaments canceled that they were scheduled to play.

All the Cougars can do now is try to finish strong, winning as many matches as possible.

The Cougars swept their matches last week, beating Capuchino, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 and South San Francisco 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16.

Half Moon Bay was in complete control in both matches, despite the close scores.

“We are finally coming together as a team,” said hitter Miranda Reimche. “It’s sad that our season is ending.”

The Cougars can look back on the season and see how close they came to battling for the league title, coming into the Terra Nova match. Little things grew into big things that hurt the Cougars. Half Moon Bay was swept by Hillsdale, including a match in five sets.
