Gas leak in El Granada, no evacuations

Coastside firefighters were dispatched at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday to handle a broken gas line at 978 Palma St. in El Granada.

A San Mateo County dispatcher said a construction crew accidentally punctured an outside gas line during the course of groundwork. There was no immediate danger to people nearby, and no homes were evacuated, he said.

“It’s fairly common,” he said. “Basically, they’re digging in the ground, they don’t have (the gas line) marked correctly, and they hit it with a backhoe or a shovel.”

Firefighters were at the scene keeping people clear at 4:30 p.m.
