The Half Moon Bay High School girls’ cross-country team is no longer under the radar screen.

The Cougars won Friday’s portion of the Monterey Bay Cross-Country Invitational with 50 points. Lynbrook was second with 62.

Sammy Hamilton and Chandra Anderson finished 1-2 in the race. Hamilton ran the 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 16 seconds, with Anderson taming the course in 19:52.

Kathleen Abadie was also in the top 10, taking eighth in the 58-girl race in 20:41. Alejandra Marin (18th, 21:34) and Montana Miller (21st, 21:48) rounded out the scoring. Maggie Galle (35th, 22:32) and Paige Williamson (38th, 22:36) also ran for the Cougars.

It’s the first time the Cougars have won an invitational race since taking a team title at the 2006 Mt. Sac Cross Country Invitational. The Cougars are scheduled to run there Friday.

Last week’s race was the first time the Cougars had their entire team available. Miller has missed several races due to injuries.

Hamilton took off from the get go. When she got to the hill late in the race, two runners from Valley Christian were close behind. For a few minutes, coming off the hill, Hamilton was alone.

Meanwhile, Anderson sat in sixth place at the hill. She passed everyone, with the exception of Hamilton and came off the hill in second. Valley Christian runners faded.

Anderson finished 11 seconds ahead of Lynbrook’s Cindy Huang, a talented runner.

The varsity boys finished fifth with 127 points. Lynbrook won with 45 points, followed by Salinas (60), Alisal (67) and Prospect (84).

The Cougars were missing one of their runners, due to an injury. But Mitch Martin finished fourth Friday in 16:38.

Ryan Dill was 14th in 17:36, followed by Dimitry Picchi (34th, 18:46), Skyler Ferry (36th, 18:54) and Jared Cilia (49th, 19:52).

The junior varsity girls were fourth with 106 points, trailing Alvarez (42), Lynbrook (54) and Salinas (80).

Fran O’Connor was fourth in 22:36, followed by Katarina Boester (fifth, 23:05), Hallie Michaels (24th, 24:38), Emily Bernstein (43rd, 25:45), Kirsten Martin (63rd, 27:24) and Paige Arnett (69th, 28:39).

The frosh-soph boys also took fourth with 105 points, trailing Wilcox (28), North Monterey County (66) and Lynbrook (67).

Kyle Cilia led the Cougars, finishing 10th in 19:11, followed by Ryan Roberts (13th, 19:22), Alex DeBaets (25th, 20:06), Brad Kelly (26th, 20:13) and Alan Mata (44th, 21:17).
