Cougars blow past Warriors, Tigers

It appears nothing will stop the Half Moon Bay High School tennis team in its drive to win the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division title.

Take Thursday’s 5-2 win over host South San Francisco. The Cougars were down one player due to an illness. That spot was filled, but the Cougars had other issues to worry about at the redone courts. A stiff breeze blew across the tennis courts, making it a bit uncomfortable.

The campus is northwest from one of the main runways at San Francisco International Airport. Every few minutes, a jet would fly by on a journey to somewhere.

“The planes don’t bother me as much as the wind did,” Simone Vandroff said. “But the wind was a bother.”

She didn’t have to deal with the wind that long as she finished her match in about 40 minutes.

She just completed her match when the Blue Angels aerial acrobatics team flew over on a practice run. It was quick, but it was loud and stopped the other matches for a few moments.

Four jets flew over followed by two more seconds later.

Once that excitement passed, it was back on to the business of finishing off the Warriors.

The win, combined with their 5-2 win over Terra Nova on Oct. 6, keeps the Cougars undefeated in league play at 9-0. Half Moon Bay enters this week holding a two-game lead over both El Camino and Oceana.

The Cougars were scheduled to play Hillsdale Tuesday.

Meanwhile, El Camino and Oceana were scheduled to play. Results of both matches were not available at press time. The Cougars host Oceana Thursday. The Cougars host El Camino on Oct. 20.

Half Moon Bay could have the league title clinched by the time it plays El Camino.

“We are very united as a team,” Vandroff said. “We have a lot of people who are stepping up.”

Unlike last year, when the Cougars finished tied for first with Westmoor, the Cougars are happy not to have to hear about opposing matches.

“I knew we would have a good year because we beat all those teams last year,” Davison said. “We did lose all of our doubles players from last year. We were a little mixed with our singles. But this year, we are strong in both singles and doubles.”
