Three years ago, Coastside resident Janice Solimeno joined Green Moms, with an eye to the future.

Green Moms, she explained, was a subgroup of the Coastside Mothers’ Club, which club member Melinda MacNaughton said focuses on family activities with a tinge of green. For example, participants make “gift bags” using recycled materials.

MacNaughton and Solimeno got to talking about taking the idea and the work of Green Moms to a higher level. “We wanted to help moms all over the world go green with their families,” Solimeno said.

Members of Green Moms work on making gift bags out of recycled material, an activity they will talk about during tonight's eco collaboration event at the Half Moon Bay Library.

Helping educate Coastsiders about what they can do to make their own lives green is the purpose of an event today at the Half Moon Bay Library. It is described by organizers as an eco-collaboration involving presentations by three pioneers in the area of green living: Independent Green Irene eco-consultant Beth Louderback, Half Moon Bay business Green Intention Design and GreenMoms.

By combining family with green, GreenMoms blossomed. “We help people with families focus on going greener,” said Solimeno. “It’s the caring, nurturing side of being a mom, not just the literal side.”

The Web site, www.GreenMoms.com, connects green-minded families worldwide, offering pointers on starting a local GreenMoms group and sharing support, resources and tips such as how to incorporate solar energy into a family’s lifestyle. Another feature proudly offered by the group is their “GreenMometer,” a guide outlining degrees of “greenness” that users can employ.

“Our goal is to be able to help people around the world replicate what we did on the coast,” said Solimeno.

There are about 15 GreenMoms groups worldwide, including in Israel, Australia, and several in the United States.

“It felt so good to have a network of people to share successes and challenges, that it made it so much easier to stay motivated to make green changes,” said MacNaughton.

That motivation will be reiterated at tonight’s event, scheduled from 6 to 7:30 at the library at 620 Correas St. in Half Moon Bay.

The event’s featured presentations will be by Louderback and Green Intention Design.

Louderback will discuss her work performing green-home and green-office makeovers, with advice on making home or office eco-friendly with conservation and toxic-free products, energy-efficient lighting, recycling, waste reduction and more. Green Intention Design offers products for green building and design materials.

Also during the event, library staff will introduce the library’s Kilowatt Meter loan program. The meter can be checked out at the library, taken home and plugged into wall sockets or electrical appliances to find out how much energy the appliance uses.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Solimeno at (415) 307-2107. An RSVP is requested to Karen@hoffmanhouse.us
