Tsunami advisory canceled; no damage here

From staff reports
Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Sep 30, 2009 - 10:39:21 am PDT

Tuesday’s tsunami advisory has been cancelled and there were no reports of damage along the West Coast.

The advisory was issued after a strong earthquake near America Samoa. A tsunami did wash over Samoa and American Samoa and scores died as their villages were washed away.

Much closer to home, on the San Mateo County coast, residents and officials say they didn’t notice any discernable change in the tide Tuesday night, though there are reports of higher-than-usual waves.
