Mary Helen Young

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, Sep 23, 2009 - 10:39:45 am PDT

Longtime coastsider Mary Helen Young died peacefully on September 6th at her home in Sacramento, surrounded by friends and relatives.  Mary was born in Los Angeles, and her family moved frequently during her childhood, settling eventually in New York, NY.  The desire to travel never left her, and as a young woman she spent time in many places, including Detroit, Mexico, and Greece.  She found what she was looking for on the coastside though, and made her home in Half Moon Bay, El Granada, and La Honda from 1977 until 1999.

A person of many interests and talents, Mary was truly devoted to her work with young children at the Coastside Infant/Toddler Center and other Bay Area children’s programs.  A dedicated professional, Mary pursued her education in child development locally at the College of San Mateo and Canada College.  She received her Masters Degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College in 2000.  After moving to the Sacramento area, Mary continued to work with children and families and taught early childhood education classes at UC Davis and Sacramento City College.  She never wavered in her belief that together we could (and must) create a safe and peaceful world where all children could thrive.

Mary spent the last few years of her life developing her talents as an artist.  She worked in a number of media, including fabric and felt, ceramics, mosaics, collage, and glass.  She also created imaginative pieces of jewelry using silver clay and other materials.  Mary became a certified silver clay instructor and taught classes in the use of that medium.  She also developed a close relationship with an arts association in Sacramento called Spirit in the Arts, finding inspiration and fellowship there.

Mary is survived by her son Karl Holden, sister Sue Kandziolka, brother Karl Young, mother Jane Young, father Charles Young, and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.  Her spirit resides in us all and in the hundreds of families whose lives she touched.  Memorial contributions can be sent to:
