SamTrans cuts largely spare coast

SamTrans directors adopted a cost-savings plan Wednesday night that keeps Coastside routes at the cost of higher fares and service reductions in other parts of the county.

Directors began mulling their options to shore up the agency’s $28.4 million shortfall earlier this summer. Until last week, when staff issued a revised savings plan, directors were strongly considering eliminating Route 17, which runs along Highway 1 from Pescadero to Montara.

The approved changes reduce services by 7.5 percent and call for layoffs of operations and administrative staff, higher rates, eliminations of seven routes, and reductions in the frequency of service to six routes. There is no impact to paratransit services.

SamTrans Board Chair Zoe Kersteen-Tucker called the service reductions “frustrating,” in a SamTrans news release issued Thursday morning.

The changes take effect Dec. 20, and are slated to save the agency $6.3 million a year.
