The Half Moon Bay Library hosts a poetry reading at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 featuring the work of the young winners of the library’s 12th annual Summer Teen Poetry Contest.

The reading will feature selections from “Moon Harvest VII/Cosecha de la Luna VII,” the anthology of poems entered in the contest.

This year’s anthology drew the poetry of 68 Coastside teens, age 12 to 19, who live in the area served by the library and its bookmobile.

The young writers’ poems in English were judged by Jimi Baloian, published author Viola Canales  and Alison Weiss, and Canales judged entries in Spanish.

The first-place award for a Spanish poem went to Edmundo Jeronimo, 17, for “Pueblo Hermano.” Second place for a Spanish poem went to Alberto Palma, 16, for “Cuenta.”

The first-place award for a poem in English went to Caroline Pisani, 17, for “Hidden Haven.” Second place went to Christine Hosfeldt, 14, who also won a poetry award at this year’s San Mateo County Fair.

Honorable Mention awards went to Esteban Cabrera, 12, Gabriela Flores-Medina, 17, Hayley Strohm, 17, and two young men, age 16 and 17, from Camp Glenwood in La Honda.

The Librarian’s Choice award went to 12-year-old Julie Sorfleet for “Poem of Little Things.”

Prize money was funded by individual donations to the Half Moon Bay Library Gift Fund. The prizes were $75 for first place, $50 for second place and honorable mentions, and $25 for Librarian’s Choice. The winners also will receive copies of the anthology.

For information, call the library at 726-2316.
